Peter Henry Emerson

Peter Henry Emerson (1856-1936) was a British scientist, physician, writer and photographer. He is best known for his disagreements with the photographic establishment of the time.  He is also known as being an early promoter of photography as an art form. He believed that photography was an artistic medium and not a tool for mechanical reproduction. His photos were always taken in a single shot and did not use retouching techniques. I really enjoy the composition and the detail of his photographs.

  1. I really enjoy his use of composition. To think in the first picture that is was in a single shot without any re-touching is pretty incredible. Very good use of light in it as well. He seems to capture the ordinary with the fantastic really well too. He's now one of my more well liked photographers of this time. Thanks!
