John Thomson

From 1877-78, photographer John Thomson teamed up with a journalist by the name of Adolphe Smith to show day-to-day living conditions of the poor in London.  They published a pamphlet, Street Life in London, which is the first photographically illustrated work dealing with social life.  I couldn't find many photos from it, but I found an article on the MoMA website which can be found here.
