Steve McCurry

In his series "It Takes Two", Steve McCurry photographs couples around the world who's relationships are reflected through their body language.  The subjects rarely meet the gaze of the viewer and this images seem to give an overly intimate look into the lives of strangers that do not know they are being observed. His photographs depict the endurance of human connection and love. There is a diversity of not only country of origin and racial background, but also of age, economic status, even living status.

McCurry's most famous photograph is one that I saw pictured in National Geographic, taken in 1984 of a 12 year old Afghan girl near a refugee camp in Pakistan.  The plight of this girl was so poignant in this image, it inspired people to find out more information about her and her situation.  It took 17 more years until McCurry found her, now almost thirty with three children, with the same piercing eyes but years of hardship in them.  These images show the strength that needed to survive in warring countries and the toll it can take on innocent lives.
