The subject of the photograph is Colin Wood, the son of well-known tennis player Sidney Wood. He was caught "in a moment of exasperation" and impatience when having a photo shoot in the park with Diane Arbus. This the only image of his expression like this, but when this Boy With Toy Hand Grenade became well-known, he hated the attention it gave him. A classmate even made copies and posted them all over the school. Now he says he sees the image is a positive in his life and that Arbus' photograph “captured the loneliness of everyone. It’s all people who want to connect but don’t know how to connect.”
