I found this article in the New York Times (albeit it was in the opinions pages). It's an article about George S. Cook.
During the Civil War, he was one of the foremost Confederate photographers and became famous by recording the gradual deterioration of Charleston and Fort Sumter. Below, is a portrait he took of Maj. Robert Anderson, the commander of Ft. Sumter when it was bombarded in Charleston.

So interesting how the article calls him the "Southern Mathew Brady" and a "photographist" to boot!
